Cross Country Skiing Along the Root River Trail
The Root River Trail, which runs through Lanesboro, has been voted one of the best bike trails in all of Minnesota! That's saying quite a lot for a state known for its rugged outdoors and vast natural spaces. The trail follows the abandoned tracks of a former railway, and it begins in the town of Fountain. From there, the Root River Trail meanders a scenic route through Bluff Country, connecting the communities of Lanesboro, Whalan, Peterson, Rushford, and Houston. This scenic trail also connects to the Harmony-Preston Valley state trail system, which offers another 18 miles of paved trail to explore. Most of the Root River Trail is groomed in the winter, making it suitable not just for cross country skiing, but snowshoeing as well. There are 30 miles of tracks spanning the area from the Isinours Forest Recreation Area in Preston to the bridge outside of Houston. A Minnesota Ski Pass is required to ski on this trail. There is a trail center located in Lanesboro that sells ski passes, and ski rentals available at the Little River General Store in Lanesboro. If you're looking for something special to do the 1st weekend in February, join the town of Whalan for their annual candlelight ski. Luminaries light up a 1/2 mile of the Root River State Trail, making for a simply magical evening in Bluff Country. If you've never tried cross country skiing or snowshoeing before, there are classes for beginners at the Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center.
